Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS) Criticising the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government for opposing the signing of Teesta Water treaty with Bangladesh, a former Indian diplomat Saturday said the treaty "could have improved" the bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh.
"The signing of Teesta Water treaty could have improved the bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh," Ronen Sen, a former Indian ambassador to US, said during an event organised by the Kolkata chapter of American Chamber of Commerce here.
"A transit-connectivity pact between the two countries is held up because of the Teesta Water treaty," Sen observed.
In September last year, Banerjee had pulled out of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led delegation to Bangladesh over the Teesta water sharing agreement, forcing India to drop it from the agenda.
According to Sen, the lack of an "eco-system" was hindering the prospects of West Bengal in attracting domestic as well as foreign investments.
"I honestly believe there is a very good potential in terms of skills in the state. But, everywhere there is a lack of eco-system," Sen said.
"If domestic investors are not coming to West Bengal, no foreign investors will be interested," he pointed out.
