Guwahati, Oct.7 (ANI): Sports is fast becoming a preferred career choice among youth of the northeast, especially after the success of sportspersons in different games like boxing, archery and weightlifting.
In Guwahati, a large number of youth recently took part in a skating championship.
Most of these skaters were in the age group of eight to sixteen.
They took up skating as a hobby, but now they want to make it their career. Perseverance and passion have helped them improve their skills over the years.
"Earlier, I was not confident about skating. But after participating in this championship and winning the blue medal, I feel confident," said Salim, a participant.
"As a participant, I felt very good. Though, I could not perform well this time, I want such championships to be held regularly so that the skaters can get a good platform," added
B. A. Kake.
The two-day-long Roller Skating championship was held for the first time in Assam. It attracted about 100 participants from different parts of the state.
The event was more of a learning experience for children than just a competition. The young skaters learnt a lot about team building, sportsmanship, and competitiveness.
The main aim behind organizing the event was to promote sports in the region.
"Nowadays, roller skating is popular and it is very good for the children. They are very keen on it and we can give them a professional platform," said Bhumidhar Barman, Secretary of the Assam Roller Skating Association.
The recent success of several sportspersons from the northeast in the recent Olympic Games has inspired many to take up sports as a career. (ANI)
