Junior women's hockey: Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand in quarters

Rai (Haryana), Oct 6 (IANS) Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand completed the quarter-final line-up with emphatic victories in the concluding league matches of Hockey India Junior Women's National Championship at Motilal Nehru School of Sports here Saturday.

Unbeaten Odisha topped their pool with a 5-2 win over Karnataka, who could not sustain their initial spirit in the game. Odisha displayed more vigour from the start when they came up with flowing moves that aided them score the first, second and third goals.

Odisha, leading 3-0 in the first half, started slow in the second as their opponents Karnataka scored their first goal through Ranjitha in the 43rd minute.

Thereafter Reshma lakra scored a brilliant field goal in the 55th minute for Odisha and three minutes later Nilprajita Majhi successfully converted penalty corner.

Karnataka tried hard to reduce the margin and scored their second goal in the 67th minute through Ranjitha but failed to make it to quarterfinals.

Uttar Pradesh beat Chhattisgarh 7-0 in their Pool F game. Kavita Maurya topped the score list with three goals, followed by Annu Kumar (2), Pranjal Sharma (1) and Kajal Malik (1).

Last year runners-up Jharkhand started promisingly against Bhopal. Drag-flicker Sushila Lakra converted a secon minute penalty corner. Basanti Kachhap scored the second goal for Jharkhand in the 21st minute followed by another goal in the 29th minute by Rajini Soreng.

Four minutes later Punam M. Tete scored a field goal while Forward Nomita Xalxo scored two continuous goals before half-time, with Jharkhand leading 6-0.

Jharkhand scored another three goals through Anima Minz (2) and Ranjita Soreng (1) ending 9-0.

The day began with Manipur notching their first win in Pool B by defeating Tamil Nadu 3-2.

Later, Gujarat hammered Puducherry 3-0 in their concluding Pool D fixture for their first win.

Pool B: Manipur 3 (T. Bidhyarani Devi; S. Ashalata Chanu; S. Loibi Chanu) beat Tamil Nadu 2 (B. Jelastina; M. Cladis Ando); Jharkhand 9 (Sushila Lakra; Basanti Kachhap; Rajni Soreng; Punam M. Tete; Nomita Xalxo 2; Anima Minz 2; Ranjita Soreng) beat Hockey Bhopal 0.

Pool D: Odisha 5 (Surabhi Pradhan 2; Lilima Minz; Elin Lakra; Nilprajita Majhi) beat Karnataka 2 (Ranjitha A.K. 2); Gujarat 3 (Firdosh Kalavadiya; Priyanka Singh; Juhi Singh) beat Puducherry 0.

Pool F: Uttar Pradesh 7 (Kavita Maurya 3; Pranjal Sharma; Annu Kumar 2; Kajal Malik) beat Chhattisgarh 0.

Quarter-final line-up:

Oct 8: Madhya Pradesh Hockey Association vs Delhi; Jharkhand vs Punjab.

Oct 9: Chandigarh vs Uttar Pradesh; Odisha vs Haryana.
