New Delhi/Shimla, Oct 3 (IANS) The world's highest polling booth will be located in Himachal Pradesh, at a height of over 15,000 feet, the Election Commission said Wednesday.

Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said the voting centre will be at Hikkam in Lahaul and Spiti district. It will cater to some 300 voters.

Sampath also identified the state's oldest voter as Shyam Saran of Kalpa, aged 95. He lives in Kinnaur district. Saran was among the first to vote in Kalpa village in the 1951 election.

Himachal's Chief Electoral Officer Narinder Chauhan told IANS that Hikkam has 326 voters.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the Hikkam station served 321 voters from three villages. It recorded the highest (83.3 percent) turnout in the district in the 2007 assembly elections.

The residents of Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti districts voted six months before the rest of India voted in the first general election of 1952 to escape heavy snow.
