Coonoor (Tamil Nadu), Sep 28 (IANS) The government has set up a directorate to address issues and concerns of small tea growers across the country, union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said Friday.

"The small growers' directorate is a fundamental part of the Tea Board to look after the interests of small growers as part of our inclusive approach and growth," Scindia said at a conference of commodity planters here.

The Planning Commission has also sanctioned about 50 posts for the directorate to ensure it reaches out to small growers in rural areas and far-flung estates.

"The directorate will monitor and ensure that all issues and concerns of small growers are addressed on priority as their welfare is an important imperative for us," Scindia told about 800 planters and other stakeholders in the sector at the 119th annual conference of the United Planters' Association of South India (Upasi).

The directorate officials will also tour all the tea plantations and estates to understand the issues and provide solutions.

Later, when asked whether similar directorates would be set up for other plantations such as coffee, rubber and spices, Scindia said the ministry would look into such a requirement after consolidating the directorate for small tea growers.

"We have made a start. Let us first consolidate that on the tea plantation sector. Once we have learnt from that, if required and if there is demand from other plantation sectors for such a directorate, we would look into it," Scindia told reporters on the margins of the conference.

As the largest commodity plantation in terms of production (976,228 tonnes), the tea sector has 159,200 growers/estates, including 84,440 in the three southern states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, producing 236,814 tonnes in fiscal 2011-12.

In terms of area, the tea plantations are spread over 580,180 hectares, including 120,181 hectares in south India and employs around 1.3 million labour across the country, with 363,000 in the southern states.
