Kollam (Kerala), Sep 27 (IANS) Celebrating her 59th birthday, Mata Amritananadamayi, known as the hugging saint, Thursday announced a Rs.25 crore charity to be launched across the country.
Speaking on the occasion, she pointed out that ecological conservation was the need of the hour.
"For 25 years we have exploited 40 percent of natural resources. If it continues like this, life on earth will be miserable for the next generation. People should learn how to respect Mother Nature," she said.
Among the other programmes announced Thursday included 200 heart surgeries and 50 kidney transplants to be done free of coast at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, for poor patients.
Her Ashram, located about 80 km from the Kerala capital, was crowded with thousands who had assembled to celebrate the birthday.
