New Delhi, Sept 23 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday hit out at Samajwadi Party (SP), saying that SP and communalism are "closely related."
Addressing a press conference here, senior BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said communal riots broke out whenever the Samajwadi Party has come to power in Uttar Pradesh.
"The Samajwadi Party and communalism are closely related. Communal riots have begun, whenever the Samajwadi Party has come to power in Uttar Pradesh. We provided riot-free administration in Uttar Pradesh," Hussain said.
He said that within six months of the Samajwadi Party rule, riots had broken out in Mathura, Pratapgarh, Allahabad, Bareilly and Lucknow.
"Not even six months have passed of the Samajwadi Party government and communal riots broke out in Kosi Kalan (Mathura), Pratapgarh, Allahabad, Bareilly-twice in one month and Lucknow, where idol of Lord hanuman was dismembered," added Hussain.
He mocked the SP to find new excuse to support the UPA government, as nobody believed its theory.
"The communal riots and tension take place during their rule. They claim that they are supporting the Congress party to stop communal forces. Nobody would believe them. They should find new excuses. It is an old excuse. Old songs don't make impact every time," he added.
Earlier, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said he would continue to support the Congress Party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to keep the communal forces out of power.
The Samajwadi Party joined other parties, including the BJP, on September 20 in the nationwide strike to protest against five rupees hike in heavily subsidised diesel prices, capping of subsidised cooking gas cylinders to six annually and allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail. (ANI)
