Peru seizes cocaine-carrying Bolivian aircraft

Lima, Sep 18 (IANS) A Bolivian-flagged light aircraft loaded with 349 kg of cocaine has been seized in Peru, the interior ministry said.

The ministry Monday said the seizure was made last Saturday in Pasco, 350 km east of Lima, where a clandestine landing strip was also found, reported Xinhua.

The cocaine, contained in 12 black plastic sacks, was found near the secret runway, said police.

According to official figures, about 320 tonnes of cocaine are produced in Peru every year and only 10 percent is seized.

There are an estimated 61,200 hectares of coca crops along 14 valleys in Peru, and 12,000 hectares of them are illegal.
