Washington, Sept. 10 (ANI): US President Barack Obama's campaign has reacted sharply to Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney's assertion that electing him will ensure that God remains on U.S. currency.
"Look, this is nothing more than a desperate attack based on a false premise by the Romney team and it's sad that the debate has been driven to this level of discourse," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki told reporters, who is traveling with the President in Florida.
"The president believes as much that God should be taken off a coin as he does that aliens will attack Florida. It's an absurd question to be raised," Politico quoted Psaki, as saying.
According to the report, White House press secretary Jay Carney added that Romney's raising the issue signaled his desperation to win the presidential race.
"There's a period when the argument is not going your way...," he said, adding: "And you begin to see random issues thrown up like spaghetti against the wall to see if anything can stick."
According to the report, Romney, while campaigning in Virginia, had vowed to keep references to God in US currency, and attacked the Democrats for an embarrassing event at their convention in Charlotte, where their policy platform did not make any reference to God.
"The pledge says 'under God.' I will not take God out of the name of our platform. I will not take God off our coins and I will not take God out of my heart," Romney said, adding: "We're a nation that's bestowed by God." (ANI)
