Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Aug 25 (ANI): Locals are gearing up for the ten-day traditional harvest festival, Onam, as they participated in traditional activities with utmost gusto, here on Saturday.
Schools and colleges have been shut for the ten-day period, as the state authorities are making elaborate arrangements for the traditional festival.
The Horticulture Department in the city has been purchasing vegetables directly from the farmers.
Speaking to reporters, locals shared their enthusiasm for the festival.
"Onam is an integral part of the Malayalee culture. This season has witnessed a rise in the price of essential commodities, but the locals are purchasing goods without any hesitation. The department here is purchasing vegetables directly from the farmers," Sudevan, a local, said.
Markets are abuzz with activities, and locals were seen haggling with shopkeepers to get the best price for their products.
The traditional 'Ona-Pookalam' usually contains ten rings, indicating the ten-day rituals marking the occasion of Onam.
The festival is greatly awaited across Kerala, as it is believed that the harvest festival heralds prosperity and happiness in the society.
Onam is marked with varied festivities, including women performing assorted dance performances and men playing musical instruments to celebrate the auspicious occasion.
The ten-day festival began on Atham, which this year was celebrated on Tuesday and it would culminate on Thiru Onam on August 29 as per the Malayalam lunar almanac. (ANI)
