Ferguson told Man U young guns never to forget last year's 'painful' title loss to City

London, Aug 20(ANI): Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has revealed manager Sir Alex Ferguson motivated young players after their heart-wrenching Premier League defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester City by telling them never to forget the moment, as it would help them win titles in future.

Welbeck said Ferguson told him and United's other young players on the journey home from Sunderland in May to 'never forget' the heartbreak of missing out on the title to City in the season's final seconds.

United had won 1-0 at Sunderland and looked set to be crowned champions until City's last-minute victory.

"I remember it well. We were travelling home on the coach. He went round all the young players and said to them 'Never forget this - because this will win you titles'," The Daily Express quoted Welbeck, as saying.

"He said, 'This will make some of you into men and be the best you can be.' When the manager says things like that to you, you really want to take note. It's good motivation to have," he added.

"I was a United fan as a kid and that makes it even more painful that we lost it to our biggest rivals. It's not something that you forget. It hurts. It's something you want to put right. Winning it back would be massive," he said.

Ferguson issued a similar rallying call to his United players after they lost the 1991-92 title to Leeds, following a painful last-day defeat at Liverpool, and the Red Devils bounced back to win four of the next five titles. (ANI)
