Deogarh (Odisha), Aug.11 (ANI): Fishermen in Odisha's Deogarh District are trying to rescue a five-year-old elephant from an island surrounded by floodwater.
The forest range officer of Deogarh district, Bijoy Kumar Mohanty, said that the elephant accidentally strayed into the water.
"It's not that the elephant got trapped in the water. It entered the water and stayed there. It is expected that the elephant would go back to the jungle and rejoin its herd," said Mohanty.
When reports last came in, the elephant was trying to save itself, but had failed due to the depth of water.
Forest officials are also involved in the rescue operation.
T N Behera, a villager, said they were scared of being attacked by the stranded elephant.
Locals are scared to go near the elephant as they fear of being attacked by it. Everyone had gathered there few locals have gone on boats and are trying to rescue it," said Behera.
