Syrian president appoints new prime minister

Damascus , Thu, 09 Aug 2012 ANI

Damascus, Aug. 9 (Xinhua-ANI): Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appointed Thursday Wael al-Halki as the new prime minister.

Wael al-Halki, the minister of health, replaced Riyad Hijab, who defected to Jordan earlier in the week.

Hijab's defection is regarded by many experts as a blow to the Syrian government.

On June 6, al-Assad issued a decree entitling former agriculture minister Hijab to form a new government. Hijab announced the formation of his cabinet on June 23. (Xinhua-ANI)
