DMRC asked for project report om monorail

New Delhi,Business/Economy, Wed, 01 Aug 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) The Delhi government Wednesday asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for a detailed project report (DPR) on an elevated monorail within three months to enable work on it to start.

The environment friendly monorail is likely to ply by 2017.

"The DMRC has been told to get a DPR ready within the next three months in order to enable the government to call for tenders for the (11 km) project," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here Wednesday.

The government had given in-principle approval to the project in January.

The 10.8 km route runs between Shastri Park Metro station to the proposed Trilokpuri Metro station in east Delhi.

Dikshit stressed the need for the early start of the project as the monorail would supplement existing transport modes, including the Delhi Metro.

In a meeting chaired by Dikshit, a presentation on the implementation of the project was made.

It was also assessed that laying tracks for the monorail in Delhi will be much cheaper as compared to laying of Metro lines.

In January, engineering consultancy company RITES Ltd. put forward a presentation after conducting a feasibility study at the meeting.

"It would provide inter-city transport service in congested localities where Delhi Metro and even buses are difficult to ply," said a statement from the chief minister's office.
