Olympic tennis: Sharapova saunters past Peer

London, July 29 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Maria Sharapova thrashed Israel's Shahar Peer in the first round of the Olympic tennis tournament at the Wimbledon grass court here Sunday.

The 25-year-old Russian, seeded third, sealed a 6-2, 6-0 win In just over an hour.

Peer, ranked 49 in the world, broke her opponent's serve in the first game of the match, but was demolished in the rest of the set as Sharapova racked up 22 winners to Peer's two in the set as a whole.

Sharapova, who carried the Russian flag at Friday's opening ceremony, will play either Britain's Laura Robson or Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the next round.
