Flamengo confirms interest in Dorival as new coach

Rio de Janeiro, July 25 (IANS) Brazilian football giants Flamengo have confirmed their interest in signing Dorival Junior as their new coach.

Less than a day after sacking Joel Santana, Flamengo's director Zinho said that his priority was to sign Dorival, who had been dismissed by Porto Alegre side Internacional last week, reports Xinhua.

"I'm interested in Dorival but we haven't met with him to talk about the position yet," Zinho said.

"He is an excellent coach and I want to be able to speak with him as soon as possible."

Santana was sacked following Flamengo's 0-1 loss to Cruzeiro Sunday which left the Rio outfit 10th in Brazil's Serie A standings with 15 points from 11 games.

Flamengo's next match is at home to Portuguesa Thursday night.
