London, July 22 (ANI): David Beckham and Jeremy Lin have joined the President and Vice President of the United States to launch a campaign against dating violence called '1 Is 2 Many.'
Soccer player Beckham, New York Knicks star Lin and Giants quarterback Eli Manning are just some of the sports men who will be lending their faces to the campaign. The target group for campaign is young men for whom the athletes would be seen as heroes.
Joe Biden brought the campaign into being last year after it was announced that one in ten teens was hurt by a date in 2011.
Women aged between 16 and 24 experiences the highest rates of violence at the hands of someone they know.
In the public service announcement, prominent athletes have urged men never to strike a woman.
"Violence against women hurts all of us," the Daily Mail quoted Joe Torre, former New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers manager, as saying while recalling his own experience as a boy.
"Growing up I was afraid and ashamed of my father when he abused my mom," Torre said.
Supporting the campaign Obama can be seen in the video saying that "Dating violence hurts all of us, so step up and help end it, because one is too many,"
The announcement will be aired this summer on sports-oriented programs on the ESPN, Fox Sports, MLB and NFL networks.
The ad also features Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays and Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Elaborating more on the subject, Biden said that hitting a woman is worst way to abuse the power.
"The worst abuse of power is when a man raises a hand to hurt a woman," Biden said.
"We all have to take responsibility. So if you see someone threatening a woman, step up, speak out and get help," he added. (ANI)
