Patna, July 20 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday expressed hopes of speedy reconstruction and functioning of the Nalanda International University.

Addressing a symposium on Nalanda International University for Asian nations, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Kumar hailed the selection of Nobel Laureate and renowned economist Amartya Sen as the Chancellor of this University.

"Amartya Sen has been officially named the chancellor of the Nalanda University and many more important decisions were taken during yesterday's meeting," Kumar said.

He added that he had met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh over the slow rate of construction work at the university, and requested him to look into the matter.

Nalanda was one of the first residential universities of ancient India, which was destroyed thrice by invaders.

The university would be fully residential and would have courses in science, philosophy and spiritualism.

The university, which is expected to be functional by 2013, would be built in an area of 446 acres in Rajgir, 10 km from the site of the ancient university in Nalanda. (ANI)
