400 offenders in Britain raped again after release

London, July 16 (IANS) Over 400 sex offenders carried out rapes after being freed from British jails, say official statistics.
Of 3,263 rapists convicted in last three years, 409 had previous sex convictions, The Sun reported Monday.
According to the ministry of justice, the re-offending level is the highest for five years.
"Public protection is our priority," it said.
It has also been revealed that the number of rapists freed before serving half their sentences also rose.
According to victims' charity Rape Crisis, punishments were not a deterrent.
"Rapists are serial offenders," said a Rape Crisis spokesperson.
