Moscow, July 16 (IANS) Former England coach Fabio Capello came out the eventual choice of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Monday to lead the country's national men's football team.

"Today we decided to appoint Capello as our national team's new manager," the RFU deputy president Nikita Simonyan was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

"We expect him to come to Moscow in the nearest future to finalize the details of his contract and sign it," said Simonyan, who is acting chief of the RFU after previous head Sergei Fursenko resigned last month.

"I think this will happen Wednesday or Thursday," he added.

Among a star-studded 13-man list of candidates, Capello, 66, had been rumoured to be the RFU's first choice to lead the national squad into the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign as Dutchman Dick Advocaat resigned after Russia suffered an early exit at Euro 2012.

A former coach of Serie A giants AC Milan, AS Roma, Juventus and Spanish Primera Liga team Real Madrid, Capello won domestic titles with each one, before he became England manager in 2007.

Capello led England to the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine but fell apart with the Football Association chiefs on skipper John Terry's role in the squad, which resulted in his resignation.
