Assam Governor surveys flood-hit areas
Garmur (Assam), July 14 (ANI): Governor of Assam J.B Patnaik surveyed the river island of Majuli and met flood victims recently.
Arriving at Garmur, the head quarters of the Majuli sub division, he assessed the relief and rescue work being conducted by the local administration.
People briefed Patnaik about their woes and sought help from state government.
Patnaik also went on foot to get a first hand account of the flood-affected Mohori Chuk where major portion of road was swept away, cutting connectivity between villages.
He instructed the administration to set up ten rehabilitation villages in Majuli and other flood affected areas in Jorhat.
The rehabilitation villages are expected to provide shelter to 555 families of Salmora, which is one of the worst hit areas during the floods.
Patnaik expressed disappointment over the slow pace of work of Brahmaputra Board that is overseeing the protection of Majuli, and directed it to expedite the construction of porcupine spars and embankments.
Authorities have given shelter, food and medicines to thousands of homeless people, and deployed mobile medical teams to prevent the outbreak of disease.
Hundreds of soldiers and rescue workers from the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts, while military helicopters have airlifted people and dropped food. (ANI)
