Athlete Pinki's human rights violated in jail, Opposition leader accuses Mamata Govt.

Kolkata, July 5 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Surya Kant Mishra, on Friday hit out at the Mamata Banerjee Government over the alleged 'inhuman torture' of Asian Games gold medallist athlete Pinki Pramanik in jail, saying the way she has been handled is definite a violation of human rights.

"There are many instances, where the chief minister was in denial mode, saying it is manufactured. Her police and administration were very prompt in arresting Pinki, whose sex is yet to be determined in a rape case. And the way she has been handled is definite violation of human rights," said Mishra.

"Lot of protests have been made...We wanted to raise this question yesterday also, but we were not allowed, on the ground that it is sub-judice," he added.

The Calcutta High Court today ordered a probe into the alleged violation of Pinki's rights.

The court has also asked the government to file an affidavit against the allegations of rights violation within two weeks.

The court was hearing a PIL filed RS Chattopadhyay against the violation of Pinki's rights.

Pinki, who has been accused of being a male and raping her former partner, is currently in judicial custody.

Pinki was allegedly kept with male inmates in a Kolkata prison. Moreover, male police personnel were seen accompanying her while she was being taken to hospital for medical tests.

A 29-second MMS showing the athlete completely naked went viral on the Internet. This video is of Pinki undergoing a gender verification test at a private nursing home after she was arrested on June 14, 2012.

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) had earlier issued a notice to the state police for insensitively handling Pinki's case. (ANI)
