Washington, July 4(ANI): Republican Senator from Brooklyn Martin Golden stirred up a massive storm after he came with a plan to organise 'style camp' for job-seeking women, but he has been forced to cancel it following severe criticism from women organizations.
The how-to-be-a-lady class, which promised to teach 'posture, deportment and feminine presence' to the job-seeking women was cancelled on Tuesday after a swarm of condemnation.
The seminar was proposed to show women 'what's new in the 21st Century as it relates to business etiquette and social protocol,' according to a taxpayer-funded promotional flyer.
Instruction was to include an introduction on the art of shaking hands as well as insight on how to "sit, stand and walk like a model," and how to negotiate stairs while still looking elegant.
But, to many women, the event sounded like an out-dated charm school, more appropriate in the era of 'My Fair Lady'.
"It's a throwback. When I hear things like this, I think: 'What world is this person living in?' " The New York Daily News quoted Marcia Pappas, president of the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women, as saying.
State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) said she would have been less offended by the failed idea if Golden this year had supported measures to help women like bills to hike the minimum wage and make it illegal to pay women less than men for the same work.
"I believe he's completely out of touch with the realities for real women in the workplace," Krueger said.
A statement from Sen. Golden's office said: "Our upcoming event, which we have chosen not to hold, is similar to ones being organized by other elected officials, as well as classes conducted in local high schools," (ANI)
