US accounts for 80% of 'global demands' for personal info on Twitter

London, July 3 (ANI): American enforcement agencies have topped the list of governments that have made the most demands for users' personal details on Twitter, according to a survey conducted by the social website.

Twitter revealed that out of the 849 total government requests for user information between January 1 and June 30 this year, 679 took place in the U.S., typically for use in criminal investigations and U.S. cops made 80 percent of the total requests for users' private information.

According to Sky News, Japan was in second place with 98 requests filed by police, followed by 11 requests from law enforcement agencies in the UK and Canada.witter, which was credited last year for fuelling social unrest, from revolutions in the Middle East to Occupy protests in US cities, has increasingly been pulled into criminal prosecutions as it gains popularity.

The company, which published the data in a blog post, also revealed it had received a total of six government's requests over the past half-year to remove tweets that violated court injunctions or local laws, such as anti-defamation statutes. (ANI)
