'I was not present in car', says Sohail Khan

Mumbai, July 2 (ANI): Bollywood actor Sohail Khan on Monday termed as unfortunate the incident where a 70-year-old pavement dweller was crushed to death by a Land Cruiser car driven by his driver Dhananjaya Pimpale, and said that he was not present inside the car when the accident took place.

Khan, however, said the pavement dwellers must be careful on the road.

Pimpale was earlier in the day arrested on various charges, including negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He was later released on bail for a surety payment of Rs. 10,000.

Pimpale, who was driving Sohal Khan's Toyata Lexus - registration number - MH 06 W 540 - crushed Chandra Bala near St. Andrews Church in Mumbai's posh Bandra area late last night.

According to police, Pimpale was behind the wheels when the accident occurred. The police said the statement of Arbaaz Khan, who is Sohail Khan's brother, will also be recorded as the car belongs to him.

Onlookers earlier today said that the car fled from the spot after the accident.

"I do not know the exact time when this incident took place. While I was carrying passengers, I saw crowd of people and I saw a woman lying injured. I asked the people and they said Sohail Khan's car passed by and crushed the woman to death. I left the place as the passengers said that they were getting late. I just know that it was Sohail Khan's car," said Tanvir Beg, an eyewitness.

"I saw a woman lying on the road and the people said that she was mowed to death by Sohail Khan's car. I do know the time when this happened. The woman was around 60 years. The police came and left the spot. The car was not there," added another eyewitness, Satish Kumar. (ANI)
