Iran, Britain to open interests sections: Iranian FM

Tehran , Thu, 28 Jun 2012 ANI

Tehran, June 28 (Xinhua-ANI): Iran and Britain have agreed to open interests sections after the two countries shut down their respective embassies seven months ago, the Press TV reported on Thursday.

Oman will be in charge of the Iranian interests section in London while Sweden will represent the British interests in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi announced on Wednesday.

The agreement was originally made during a meeting between Salehi and his British counterpart William Hague on the sidelines of the Afghanistan summit earlier this month, said the report.

In November 2011, thousands of angry Iranian demonstrators broke into two British embassy compounds following Iran's decision to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Britain in response to its imposed financial sanctions against Tehran.

Britain withdrew its diplomats from Iran and shot down its embassy following the incursion into its embassy in Tehran.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague also said he had ordered the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and demanded all its staff leave Britain. (Xinhua-ANI)
