5 Pak terror suspects arrested by Ugandan police ahead of 2nd anniversary of Kampala attacks

London, Wed, 27 Jun 2012 ANI

London, June 27 (ANI): Five Pakistanis have been arrested in by Ugandan Police in the country's oil dominant western region, just two weeks before the second anniversary of the deadly terror attacks in national capital Kampala.

Ugandan police spokeswoman Judith Nabakoba said the five men were arrested Sunday in Ntoroki district after they had crossed the border that separates Uganda from the Republic of Congo.

In the Congo, they had allegedly met with Allied Democratic Forces, a group of Ugandan rebels formed in the mid-1990s to overthrow the government and establish an Islamic state.

"They were arrested after they crossed into Uganda with a Congolese guide. They are suspected to be involved in terrorism but we are still interrogating them," the Wall Street Journal quoted Nabakoba, as saying.

Following the arrests, Ugandan Police issued a terror alert, warning that militants could target Ugandan fans watching Euro 2012 games.

The warning comes two years after a terror strike in Kampala, that left more than 80 people dead. The Somali militant group Al Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ugandan Police haven't rvealed the identities of the five arrested men.

Bony Katatumba, Consul General at the Pakistan Consulate in Uganda, said he was still waiting for a formal notification from the police about the charges the men face. He added that there are some 5,000 Pakistanis in Uganda, engaged in a number of businesses, ranging from car dealerships to pharmaceuticals.

"I have heard about the arrests, but the police is yet to furnish me with the details," Katatumba said.

A spokesman for the Pakistan's Foreign office was unavailable for comment. (ANI)
