Turkey threatens military retaliation against Syria

Istanbul, Wed, 27 Jun 2012 ANI

Istanbul, June 27 (ANI): Turkey warned of possible military retaliation if Syrian forces approach near its southern border, according to a report.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Syria has now represented a clear threat to Turkish national interests.

"Every military element from Syria at the Turkish border that forms a security risk and danger will be assessed as a threat and be treated as a military target," the Wall Street Journal quoted Erdogan, as saying.

The harsh warning came as ambassadors from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) condemned Syria's attacks on Turkish military jets.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said NATO would continue to closely follow events on the 565-mile Turkey-Syria border, and if necessary consult again 'to discuss what else could be done.'

Meanwhile, Damascus has defended its action, saying the Turkish F-4 Phantom was in its airspace and approaching Syrian land at high speed when its air defenses shot it down. (ANI)
