Girls' rugby league kicks off in Western Sydney

Melbourne, June 23 (ANI): Girls from Australian schools will now enjoy the game of rugby by playing it, instead of cheering from the sidelines.

Not content to be confined to traditional female sports such as netball, students from Kingswood High School two years ago lobbied PE teacher Kimberlee Fry to allow them to form a girls' rugby league team.

This week, the self-starters were holding their own against more than 250 primary and high school students across Western Sydney at the Women and Girls Gala Day in Penrith.

"My mum calls me a bit of a boy but I just like the adrenaline you get when you play," the Daily telegraph quoted Year 11 student Taleah Gunther as saying.

Although some parents were uncomfortable with their daughters tackling other players and refused to allow them to attend the gala, Fry said most families had been supportive. (ANI)
