England fans cry foul as Kiev hotels increase rates 1000-fold ahead of Euro QF

London, Fri, 22 Jun 2012 ANI

London, June 22(ANI): England fans have claimed that they are being forced to pay exorbitant amount of prices for hotels in Kiev, where almost 6000 Three Lions fans are expected to congregate for their team's Euro Cup quarterfinal clash against Italy.

There have been claims that some hotels had increased their prices by a stunning 1,000%, and many are charging five times more than the normal rates.

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) president Michel Platini has already branded Ukraine's hoteliers 'bandits and crooks' after price hikes, and fans' leaders have said they are at it again.

Supporters have plenty of Kiev hotels to choose from since Sweden's 20,000 followers headed home after taking over the city during the group stages

One Kiev guesthouse is charging 125 pounds a night for two fans staying in a standard double room. The normal price is 26 pounds, or 13 pounds per person.

A four-star hotel is asking 188 pounds for a standard double, more than treble the usual 61 pounds.

"Thousands of England fans are coming over now but Kiev's hotel prices are going up day by day. We're hearing city center hotel prices have increased by up to 1,000%," The Daily Star quoted Mark Perryman, a spokesman for the London branch of the official englandfans supporters club, as saying.

"Hotels know one of the bigger and better supported teams are coming to town and they're taking advantage of it. It helps for availability of accommodation that we're playing in Kiev, which has more accommodation than Donetsk, and that we're playing Italy, one of the less well supported teams," he added.

"But fans will have to be willing to take the accommodation available and the price is going up," he said. (ANI)
