Mahi trapped in borewell not responding to calls

Harayana,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Thu, 21 Jun 2012 IANS

Gurgaon, June 21 (IANS) Mahi, the four-year-old girl who fell into a 70 feet deep borewell in Haryana's Manesar town was not responding to the calls of the rescue team Thursday, even as authorities stepped up efforts to rescue her.

A huge drill machine, which is used for digging earth for fixing pillars for elevated Metro, was Thursday pressed into service to dig a parallel bore to the borewell in which Mahi is trapped.

Mahi slipped into the borewell near Manesar's Industrial Model Township (IMT) on National Highway-8 while the family was celebrating her birthday around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Praveen Mehta told IANS: "We have booked the plot owner Rohtash Singh, a resident of Najafgarh in New Delhi."

Mahi is the daughter of Niraj Uppadhyay, who hails from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district. He is a supervisor at a factory in Manesar and was living in Kasan village with his wife Sonia, Mahi and a two-year old daughter.

Meanwhile, two other such abandoned borewells were found in the 30-metre area where Mahi is trapped. Army and National Security Guard personnel have been called in to rescue the child. The area near the borewell being congested has increased the problems for the rescue team.

Deputy Commissioner P.C. Meena was coordinating the rescue effort. Army engineers under the leadership of Lt. Col. Avinash Tyagi were part of the operation.

Three JCB machines were pressed into service to dig from two parallel sides of the borewell. Pipes carrying oxygen were put in to help the child breathe.

The girl child was talking to her father up to 2 a.m. but fell silent thereafter, chief medical officer Praveen Garg said.
