Fiji to launch drive for voter registration

Fiji,Politics, Fri, 15 Jun 2012 IANS

Suva, June 15 (IANS) In a bid to ensure that all eligible voters register themselves before the 2014 general elections, the Fijian government has decided to launch a massive nationwide campaign, Xinhua reported.

According to local website Fijivillage, the government has decided to utilise all mainstream media outlets to encourage voter registration as it is no longer compulsory to register or vote.

Earlier, it was mandatory to vote in the general elections and those who failed to vote would be fined 20 Fiji dollars (about $12).

The report quoted Fijian Minister for Elections and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as saying that there was a need to appeal to the people through the media so that all Fijians would understand it was their right to vote.

Electronic voter registration is expected to be officially launched June 29. The drive will be carried out by over 1,100 voter registration clerks with the Canadian company CODE INC, and 380 electronic kits will be used.
