Srinagar , Thu, 14 Jun 2012 ANI

Srinagar, June 14 (ANI): As the irate employees extended their protest against the state government to the second day, the police resorted to the use of water cannons to disperse them.

Several protestors were arrested and hundreds of them courted arrest.

The employees were protesting as they alleged the government failed to fulfill the promises made to them with regards to regularization of their services.

The protest was held under the banner of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) - an amalgam of various state employees' unions.

They have been demanding an increase in the retirement age from 58 years to 60 years and rise in their pay scale from rupees 6500 to 10500.

The employees also demanded that their arrears should be released according to the recommendations made by the sixth pay commission.

The protestors had decided to gather near Khalsa School and march towards the Civil Secretariat; however, they were countered by the police.

Several protestors were injured and hundreds of them courted arrest.

The JCC had carried out such protests in the state several times and they had indicated that they would intensify their protest and government would be held responsible for the disruption caused.

The protesting employees urged the regularization of the services of those employees who had completed seven years of services after 1994. (ANI)
