Bangladesh garment workers demand wage hike

Bihar,Business/Economy, Wed, 13 Jun 2012 IANS

Dhaka, June 13 (IANS) Dozens of people were injured Wednesday when striking garment workers clashed with police on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Golam Rouf Khan, director of industrial police, told Xinhua that dozens of people were injured.

Police fired tear gas and baton-charged the protesters who fought back with bricks.

At least 100 people, among them policemen, were injured, media reports said.

Production at dozens of factories in Ashulia industrial belt remained suspended after unrest erupted Monday.

The government in 2010 announced 3,000 taka (about $43) as the minimum monthly wage for the country's 2.5 million garment workers.

The workers are demanding a 2,000-taka hike from the present minimum monthly wage.
