Human rights are exploited by rich and powerful people: NHRC Chairperson

New Delhi, June 12 (ANI): National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mr. Justice K. G. Balakrishnan has said that human rights are exploited by rich and powerful people and this is the biggest challenge. However, these rights will never lose their significance; rather it will grow with their expanding dimensions and legal sanctity accorded to them.

Mr. Justice Balakrishnan was addressing the valedictory session of the month long summer internship programme of the NHRC in New Delhi today.

Congratulating 49 interns on successful completion of their training in human rights and related laws, he hoped that they would make use of this knowledge in promotion and protection of these rights.

Sanchit Singh of National Law Institute University, Bhopal and Shikha from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai stood first and second respectively in their batch. Four interns-Bhartendu Agarwal, National Law Institute, Jodhpur, Ritam Arora, Amity University Lucknow, Asha P. Soman, School of Legal Studies, Kochi University of Science and Technology and Arjun Krishna, National Law Institute University, Bhopal shared the best intern award.

The NHRC Chairperson honoured Mrs Neelam, Ranchi College, Ranchi with a special complimentary award for her courage to resume her higher studies after having spent much time as a house wife.

Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary, NHRC said that in addition to building awareness on human rights, this programme is also serving the purpose of national integration as its participants come from different parts of the country. He hoped that the interns will carry with them the value of spirit of unity, national integration and respect for human rights. The 49 interns, including 29 females and 20 males, came from 13 States and Union Territories of India. Amina Bibi was the first intern of the NHRC training programme from the Andaman and Nicobar islands.(ANI)
