Over 400,000 Nepalis leave for jobs overseas
Kathmandu, June 12 (IANS) More than 400,000 Nepali youths have left the country in 10 months of the current fiscal year in search of jobs, a media report said.
The Department of Foreign Employment figures show that 413,471 Nepalis have left for about four dozen countries in the last 10 months to work. The number matches the government projection of some 400,000-plus Nepalis entering the job market every year, reported Xinhua.
"The increase in outflow was recorded due to three reasons: Increased outflow of Terai people, demand for unskilled workers in Qatar and closure of domestic industries," migration expert Ganesh Gurungy was quoted as saying by The Himalayan Times.
"Currently, Terai people in large numbers are joining foreign jobs because of the closure of industries based in the Terai following energy crisis, high interest rates and frequent labour disputes," he said.
Labour expert Chiranjibi Nepal says the outflow cannot be stopped unless the government creates investment-friendly environment in the country.
"We need a comprehensive employment plan, and honesty to implement it," said Nepal.
"Protracted political transition has forced the investors to flee the country."
