Five bodies found in quake-hit northern Afghan town

Pul-e-Khumri (Afghanistan), Tue, 12 Jun 2012 ANI

Pul-e-Khumri (Afghanistan), June 12 (Xinhua-ANI): An earthquake jolted parts of Afghanistan has triggered landslide in the mountainous Burka district of Baghlan province 160 km north of capital Kabul, destroying 25 houses and dozens of people were feared dead, local officials said Tuesday.

"So far five bodies have been discovered and the rescue operation is going on," spokesman for provincial administration Mahmoud Haqmal said.

Meantime, local officials said that almost all the female and children of the 25 destroyed houses have been trapped under the debris since Monday and were feared dead.

According to locals, the males of the families were out in their farmlands during the quake.

Since Burka is a far-flung area and communication there is poor, authorities reported the casualties a day later on Tuesday.

The rescue operation with the support of tractor, bulldozer and excavator are trying to take out those stranded under debris, live or dead.

However, the wailing male members of affected families are calling on the government to speed up the rescue operation.

A quake measuring 5.7 shocked several parts of Afghanistan including the capital Kabul Monday morning. (Xinhua-ANI)
