Pudukottai to go for polls Tuesday

Chennai, June 11 (IANS) Pudukottai assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu is set to witness a straight fight between ruling AIADMK and DMDK after boycott of the Tuesday by-poll by major opposition parties, including DMK and CPI.

The by-poll in Pudukottai, 350 km from here, is necessitated following the death of CPI's legislator S.P. Muthukumaran in a road accident in April 2012, but the party alongwith other major opposition groups is boycotting the polls, charging fraud.

While there are 18 contestants in the fray, the two major choices before the Pudukottai are the ruling AIADMK's candidate Karthik Thondaiman and the opposition party DMDK's N. Jahir Hussain.

Polling will begin 8 a.m. Tuesday and end at 5 p.m for the total electorate numbering over 190,000.

Currently in the 235-member Tamil Nadu assembly, AIADMK has 150 (including the speaker) members followed by DMDK's 29, DMK's 23, CPI-M's 10, CPI's eight, Congress's five and PMK's three, among others.
