Mulayam hails daughter in law Dimple's Kannauj by poll win

Lucknow, June 10 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has hailed his daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav for her unopposed election to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh.

"The people of Kannauj have stood up and unanimously endorsed her candidature. Indeed, it was a walk over, this is a historic event," Yadav told media here.

Meanwhile supporters of the party celebrated her victory by distributing sweets.

"We are very happy that our sister-in-law from Samajwadi Party has won the polls unopposed. We are celebrating this historic event by distributing sweets amongst party activists and respecting the model code of conduct," said Brijesh Singh.

"It is a proof that the Samajwadi Party respects and follows the model code of conduct. The credit for this victory goes to our leader and ruler of young hearts, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav and our sister-in-law Dimple Yadav who has tried to integrate the entire region of Kannauj," he added.

Dimple, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was declared elected unopposed to the Lok Sabha from the Kannauj.

The latest developments in this regard came after two candidates in the fray against her withdrew their nominations for the by-poll that was to be held on June 24.

Dimple, 35, who filed her nomination papers on June 5, had earlier said that being the chief minister's wife, it would be a golden opportunity for her to work for Kannauj.

"I think being the wife of the chief minister, I have the best opportunity to work for the welfare of the people and to work for the development of my constituency," she said.

Dimple had contested the 2009 Firozabad by-election, but lost to Congress candidate Raj Babbar.

The Kannauj parliamentary constituency fell vacant after Akhilesh Yadav resigned from the Lok Sabha on being sworn in as a member of the UP Legislative Council and after becoming the State's chief minister.

Akhilesh Yadav has represented the Kannauj seat thrice. (ANI)
