16 killed in Pakistan clash

Islamabad, June 8 (IANS) At least 16 people -- 13 militants and three civilians -- were killed Friday in clashes with security forces in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province, media reports said.

The clashes broke out when a group of gunmen killed the son of a tribal elder and opened fire on tribal people in Zardakan area of Chaghi district, Xinhua reported.

Paramilitary troops chased the militants and gunned down 13 of them.

Three tribal people were also killed in the exchange of fire.

Residents said security forces seized several vehicles and a huge cache of arms from the militants.

No loss of life was reported among the security forces.

The identities of the attackers have not been known yet.

Balochistan Information Minister Mohammad Younas Mullazai has said a military operation would be launched against militants in the province.
