New Delhi, June 8 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday congratulated Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi for winning the French Open mixed doubles title, and expressed the hope that India's victory in other fields of life would also spread across the globe, as in sports.
"I believe that at a time when such types of disputes are coming up, at that point of time if these players hoist the Indian victory aboard then it is a matter of great pleasure and honour. I congratulate them on behalf of the people of this country and myself," said BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
"And I expect that the manner in which India's victory is spreading across the globe in the field of sports, it will spread in other areas too," he added.
Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi won their second Grand Slam title together and first French Open trophy after defeating Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Santiago Gonzalez in the mixed doubles final in Paris on Thursday.
Playing their third Grand Slam final together, the seventh seeded Indian pair scored a 7-6 (3) 6-1 win over the Polish-Mexican pair in one hour and 13 minutes at the Court Philippe Chatrier.
Mahesh Bhupathi, one of the most successful men's doubles and mixed doubles players ever, won the title on his 38th birthday.
It is for the first time that Mahesh Bhupathi has won two Grand Slam titles with the same partner - Sania Mirza. Before winning the French Open title, the Indian pair had won the Australian Open in 2009.
It is second career Grand Slam title for Sania while 12th Major trophy for Bhupathi, who now has won eight mixed doubles trophies. (ANI)
