Baghdad, June 7 (IANS) A secretary and close aide of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has been executed after being convicted for genocide, the Iraqi justice ministry said Thursday.

Abed Hamid Hamoud al-Tikriti was among the top aides of Saddam Hussein who were sentenced to death by hanging Oct 26, 2010, over charges of eliminating religious parties in the 1980s.

"The justice ministry today (Thursday) has implemented the execution sentence issued earlier against Abed Hamid Hamoud al-Tikriti, secretary of Saddam Hussein," a ministry official told Xinhua.

Saddam Hussein himself was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court Nov 5, 2006, after a year-long trial over the killings of at least 148 Shias in the 1980s. He was hanged Dec 30, 2006.

He took over power in 1979, and took the posts of prime minister, chairman of the Revolution Command Council and armed forces commander-in-chief. Saddam Hussein triggered the first Gulf War in 1991 when he invaded Kuwait.
