Kirti Azad opposes legalizing betting in cricket

New Delhi, June 6 (ANI): Former cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Kirti Azad, on Wednesday opposed the move to legalise betting in cricket matches.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar to discuss betting in sports, Azad said legalisation of betting would pave way for spot fixing and match fixing.

"Betting is such an act that will always result in losses for the punters. If you feel legalising betting is apt, then how will you defend match fixing?" he said.

He emphasized on the need to regulate the sport federations and allied associations in the country, before planning such a move.

Further, he noted that there was no accountability of a large sum of money being transferred from unknown sources to a sportsperson's account or opening of new bank ccounts in foreign countries without prior permissions from the concerned authorities in the country. (ANI)
