Garo militant nabbed in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 5 (IANS) Border Security Force (BSF) troopers Tuesday nabbed a militant of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and recovered arms and ammunition from him, an official said.
The GNLA is fighting for a separate state of Garoland in western part of Meghalaya and maintains operational alliance with the Assam-based United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).
Konan Sangma was apprehended from Purakhasia market bordering Bangladesh in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills Tuesday by BSF troopers, the official said.
A 7.65 mm US-made pistol, two magazines and 9 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the militant's possession.
The GNLA, which is headed by police officer-turned outlaw Champion R.Sangma, has unleashed a reign of terror in the three districts of Garo Hills in the western Meghalaya.
