Kabul , Tue, 05 Jun 2012 ANI

Kabul, June 5 (Xinhua-ANI): More than 80 anti- government militants gave up fighting and surrendered to the government in Baghlan province 160 km north of capital Kabul on Tuesday, according to police.

"Today 83 dissident brothers who were unhappy with the government laid down their arms and surrendered," provincial police chief Assadullah Shirzad said in his remark to welcome the former militants.

These people, he said, were active in Gazargah Noor district over the past couple of years and with their surrender to government the security situation will be further improved.

More than 3000 anti-government militants, according to officials, have laid down arms and resumed normal life over the past one year in Afghanistan. However, Taliban outfit, the main armed opposition group fighting Afghan government has rejected the claim as baseless. (Xinhua-ANI)
