Severe shortage of ice hits fishing industry in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam , Tue, 05 Jun 2012 ANI

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), June 5 (ANI): Fishermen in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, are these days running from pillar to post to procure ice, which they say is essential to preserve fish caught by them.

Though fishing has been allowed since midnight of May 31 after a 47-day ban, most of the boats were stationed at the harbour due to a shortage of ice.

In fact, water crisis, soaring power bills and a host of other problems have led to this shortage of ice.

Though, there are about 20 to 30 ice plants in and around the area, there is not enough supply to meet the demands of the fishing industry as well as to fulfill the requirements of the pharmaceutical companies.

"When they go for fishing, the boat needs about 10 to 20 tonnes of ice for a voyage of 15 days, but due to scarcity in the production of ice because of power cuts, so sufficient ice is not supplied to the boat owners and all the boats could not go for fishing. The prices have already risen from 150 to 300 rupees per ton," said Swarna Kumari, Assistant Director, Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Department.

Fishermen have off late switched over to bigger boats, which results in a greater demand for ice.

Officials said that their itineraries have also undergone a change because of this shortage of ice.

"There is scarcity, so it can rise upto 500 rupees because of that all the boats could not go for voyage from the 01st of June this year," said Kumari.

Power tariff has increased by 38 per cent for ice plants. The spiralling cost of salt and ammonium gas has also contributed to ice being more costly. (ANI)
