BJP MP Sidhu hails Congress for nominating Sachin to Rajya Sabha
Amritsar/Mumbai/New Delhi, June 4 (ANI): Former cricketer and BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday welcomed batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar's new innings in the Rajya Sabha, and hailed the ruling Congress Party for selecting a right candidate.
"He has a capability and power has been given to him. All the nominations, be it, Rekha ji or Tendulkar, I thank the Congress party for this that they have selected a right person," he said
Appreciating Tendulkar's potential, Sidhu said the Rajya Sabha's significance has increased with his entry into the House.
"Rajya Sabha's significance has increased with the entry of person like Sachin Tendulkar. His association (with Rajya Sabha) is something like water, when mixed with milk, sells like milk. Tendulkar is like a Kohinoor diamond which if embossed in a crown, it becomes invaluable. This decision is above any party line. The nomination to Rajya Sabha goes to the people who have earned a name in their own working field," Sidhu told media in Amritsar.
"Tendulkar has not only earned name but has institutionalised himself. Today, there are countless kings or ministers but Tendulkar is only one in the history of India, whose name will be written in golden letters. He has left indelible imprints on the sands of time," he added.
Sidhu further said Tendulkar's name would be written in golden letters in the history of India because of his exceptional and extraordinary performances.
Meanwhile, Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal hoped that Tendulkar would contribute his best to public life.
"I am very happy for Sachin that he is one of us, a Member of Parliament, and I will be waiting for an opportunity to hear him in the Rajya Sabha and to make the kind of contribution to public life as he has made in cricket," Sibal told media in Mumbai.
"His contribution to cricket has been phenomenal and I am sure that his contribution to public life will be equally phenomenal," he added.
Tendulkar, who took his oath in Hindi in the office of Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, is the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha under the Prominent Citizens Quota.
He was nominated to the Upper House along with film actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Aga in April, but had to wait to take his oath until the end of IPL season 5.
Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and one-day international cricket. He is the first player to score a double century in ODI cricket.
In 2002, just 12 years into his career, Wisden ranked Tendulkar the second greatest Test batsman of all time, behind Donald Bradman, and the second greatest one-day-international (ODI) batsman of all time, behind Viv Richards. He was also a part of the 2011 Cricket World Cup winning Indian team. (ANI)
