Narendra Modi slams Central Govt. for economic slowdown

New Delhi , Sat, 02 Jun 2012 ANI

New Delhi, June 2 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has slammed the Central Government for economic slowdown in the country.

"There is complete (policy) paralysis. It is result of that the country is under distress and how to come out of this. We, people of Gujarat, are fortunate that we are going ahead with the double-digit growth. We would have contributed more if the condition of the country had been better. We are also worried," Modi told reporters after discussions with Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar.

However, Kumar countered Modi allegations and said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government would do whatever was supremely necessary in overarching national interest despite politically motivated charges of policy paralysis.

"We need the support of our allies and opposition to have the bills passed. Whatever we can do on the executive decision basis we will try and do so. Because I am convinced one thing about UPA-I and UPA-II that whatever is supremely necessary in overarching national interest it will be done, notwithstanding politically motivated charges of policy paralysis," Kumar said.

India's economic growth slumped to its lowest level in nine years in the first three months of 2012, marking a dramatic slide in the fortunes of a country whose economy boasted nearly double-digit growth before the global recession.

The economy grew 5.3 percent in the last quarter from a year earlier, a sharp slowdown from 9.2 percent growth in the last quarter of the previous year, government data showed. (ANI)
