Mandela looks healthy on TV

South Africa,Politics, Thu, 31 May 2012 IANS

Cape Town, May 31 (IANS) Former South African president Nelson Mandela has appeared on TV at his home in Qunu, Eastern Cape, looking healthy.

The footage Wednesday shows Mandela receiving a flame marking the African National Congress (ANC) centenary, surrounded by his grandchildren and wife Graca Machel.

Sitting in an armchair, the 93-year-old Nobel peace laureate said he was "happy" to see the flame because "I used to be the leader of the ANC," which celebrated its centenary earlier this year.

This was Mandela's first appearance on TV since October last year, when he was filmed at his Johannesburg home filling out a census form in local government elections, Xinhua reported.

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison, was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994, one year after he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He stepped down in 1999 after serving a five-year term.
