BJP raps Delhi Government for hike in CNG rates
New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman has criticized the Delhi Government for increasing the price of CNG (compressed natural gas), while decreasing taxes on petrol in its annual state budget.
"We recently heard of the Delhi Government's decision to come up with a nominal cut in the petrol prices by about 1 rupees 26 paise with a simultaneous increase of one rupee seventy paise on the CNG rates. The BJP considers this as nothing but pure drama," Sitharaman told media here .
"If you really think that you want to reduce the burden of the common man, the Congress party in the Union Ministry would not have risen to the occasion to trouble the ordinary citizens with an increase of more than seven rupees on petrol," she added.
She further said it was a move inspired by elections in mind of the Congress party.
"On the road towards election, the state government thought it can mislead the people by cutting down one rupee 26 paise on petrol. But it has increased the common man's fuel, which is CNG," she said.
"Today not just diesel, CNG, in Delhi particularly, is a common man's fuel. The public transport runs on it, autorickshaws run on CNG, and if you are increasing, not rupees 1.26, but rupees 1.70 on CNG having cut down the petrol price by rupees 1.26, can you see that the ordinary man is going to be burdened far more by the benefit which is coming from the cut on petrol?" she added.
The Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA-II) government had on March 24 announced a hike in petrol prices by rupees.7.50 per litre.
The move has triggered protest and an outcry from the masses, and from parties across the national political spectrum, including key government allies, who have demanded an immediate rollback. (ANI)
